English language education has
been one of the historic hallmarks of a Christ's College degree. As English
has grown into an international language of business, communication and transportation,
the importance of learning English has taken on new significance. The English
department at Christ's College offers courses for all students enrolled in the
college. All students enrolled in Christ's College are given the opportunity
to improve their English language ability as they are required to take 24 hours
of English as part of their common core studies during the freshman year.
English Program Goal
The goal of these basic English courses is to produce students who are proficient in English language communication. To reach that goal our dedicated team of English speaking professors use solid, up to date, teaching materials and instructional procedures. Many of the textbooks and related study materials that used in these courses are those that would be used in similar courses in US and English institutions. In addition to this, our faculty uses a variety of teaching methods including lectures, demonstrations, cooperative learning, project work and student performances. The English department is also committed to using educational technologies such as video and computer assisted instruction.
English B.A. Program
In 2003, the department began to
offer three majors in English. The first of these is the Bachelor of Arts in
English. The goal of the English BA major at Christ's College is to equip students
to meet the demands of the 21st century by developing: their Christian character,
ethics and worldview; their English language proficiency and understanding of
English speaking cultures; their professional, teamwork and leadership skills;
and their motivation for life-long learning. To qualify for this program the
student must complete the intermediate freshman English course sequence with
at least a 70% GPA. The English major requires a total of 90 hours of English,
24 of which are met by the intermediate freshmen English course sequence. The
sophomore year builds on these foundational courses with additional courses
in Public Speaking, Small Group Communications, World Literature and College
Composition. In the junior year, students are challenged to raise their level
of English communication to new heights by courses that include: Intercultural
Communications, Drama, American Literature, Research Writing; and Creative Writing.
In their senior year, students are given the opportunity to demonstrate their
English language communication skills in courses such as Theater Production,
Debate, and British Literature. In addition to these courses, from the sophomore
year on, students are required to choose one English elective per semester from
courses such as English Bible as Literature, World Novels, Business Communication,
TESOL, American Culture, and Children's Literature. The student must have cumulative
70% GPA for all English courses. A major in English is excellent preparation
for professions such as teaching, business or other ministry-related vocations,
including those requiring graduate work and our graduates have gone on to successfully
pursue careers in all of these areas.
English Language Teaching B.A. Program
The second major offered by the
English department is the Bachelor of Arts in English Language Teaching. With
the recent movement to begin teaching English at the elementary level in Taiwan
public schools it seems likely that the demand for English teachers for children
is going to grow. This degree program allows English majors to develop the special
skills needed to teach English to young learners and/or pursue a MA TESOL degree
at an English medium graduate institution. To qualify for this program the student
must complete the intermediate freshman English course sequence with at least
