基礎英文課程Intensive English Program
(ENG 001) 英文會話 (3)
本課程培養學生界於初級至中級之間程度之口語英語熟練度,強調透過課程上的活動來培養聽、說技巧,使學生正確地使用英文。其內容包含介紹、問候、行程、購物、娛樂、生活的經驗及休閒活動等。
(ENG 001) Conversation (3)
This course focuses on development of oral English proficiency at the advanced
beginning to pre-intermediate level. Emphasis is placed on the development of
oral and aural skills with classroom activities designed for student production
of authentic language. This authentic language will include introductions and
greetings, schedules, shopping, entertainment, past experiences and leisure
activities.

本課程將介紹英語的發音、韻律、及語調的基本要素。學生將學習常用英文字的發音符號及標準拼字練習,並運用字典來學習發音,課程中練習聽寫約500個常用,規則和不規則單字的拼音。
(ENG 021) Pronunciation (3)
This course introduces students to basic elements of the pronunciation, rhythm
and intonation of English. Students will study and practice phonetic representation
of sounds, with emphasis on using a dictionary to learn pronunciation. Listening
and dictation of 500 common words with both regular and irregular spelling will
be practiced.

This course develops grammatical building blocks, which will be applied to subsequent
college writing courses. Students will gain an understanding and awareness of
the value of the order of words and sentences and their relationships to each
other in communicating ideas. Students will develop skills in categorization,
organization and personal expression. Beginning with the basic parts of speech,
students will learn how to express themselves in writing through the use of
correct sentence-level grammar.

(ENG 101) 應用英文 (3)
本課程提供中級程度之聽、說基本溝通技巧。運用實用、豐富的語彙和詞語及相關活動幫助學生吸收英文的功用、構造與字彙。學生也藉由多元化實況模擬活動,來提昇英文之流暢度與正確度。本課程還包括期末口頭以及書面之成果評量。
(ENG 101) Applied English (3)
This course builds on foundational communication skills by providing instruction
and practice in English listening and speaking at the intermediate level. Rich
language input is provided in authentic conversations accompanied by receptive
activities that help students absorb new functions, structures and vocabulary.
Authentic language tasks offer both focused practice and opportunities for natural
interaction, promoting both fluency and accuracy. A major component of this
course is a final oral/written presentation that is included as part of the
assessment data for our graduation standards.

本課程著重以小組之形式進行,強調小組互動的要素、問題的解決、領導技巧等。此外如人格特質、人際關係、非語言性溝通及跨文化之溝通等各種會影響溝通之因素,也一併在此課程中討論。

This course focuses on communication in English within small group settings.
The dynamics of interacting within a small group, problem solving, and leadership
skills are emphasized. Aspects of intrapersonal, interpersonal, non-verbal and
inter-cultural communication, which impact small group communication, are also
discussed.
(ENG 121)進階發音學 (3)
本課程將介紹學生美式英語的發音、節奏、及語調的基本要素。學生們將學習並演練語音的差異、基礎發音用語及使用字典學習發音,並將練習聽寫約1000個常用規則和不規則單字的拼音。
(ENG 121) Advanced Pronunciation (3)
The aim of this intermediate-level course is to give students practice in the
intonation, sounds and rhythm of American English. Students will study and practice
phonetic representation of sounds, basic phonetic terminology and how to use
a dictionary to learn pronunciation. Listening and dictation of 1,000 common
words with both regular and irregular spelling will be practiced.

本課程引導學生如何閱讀英文小說,學生將學習基礎閱讀之技巧、小說構成之要素、並提昇對英文小說的賞析能力。為了降低閱讀障礙,學生將廣泛閱讀簡易版(約1200字左右的單字為基礎)之世界小說名著。
(ENG 131) Intro to English Fiction (3)
This course is an introduction to reading in English. Students learn basic reading
strategies, the basic elements of fiction (plot, character, setting and theme)
and how to appreciate reading English fiction for personal enrichment. The course
is organized around the reading of well-known novels in their simplified form.
Vocabulary development is also emphasized with the goal of having each student
reading without difficulty at the 1,200-word level.

本課程進一步地運用英文小說導讀所學之閱讀基礎,深入地賞析小說,同時簡介英文詩詞 。透過學生的表演、短文回應及資料查詢來提升對文學名著的欣賞及理解力 。
(ENG 132) English Fiction & Poetry (3)
This course advances on the basic skills taught in the Intro to English Fiction
course. More in depth analysis of fiction is combined with a cursory look at
poetry. The course promotes the comprehension and appreciation of great works
of literature through student performances, response journals and a variety
of library activities.

(ENG 141) Applied English Grammar (3)
This course is an overview of basic grammatical structures in the English language.
Emphasis is placed on the formation of grammatically correct sentences by teaching
students how to evaluate their own writing and make the necessary corrections.
(ENG 142) 基礎作文 (3)
本課程著重於英文寫作的基礎,如措辭、造句等來完成一個英文段落。課程設計各式段落寫作及修改練習,透過寫日記和段落範例逐步分析來達到課程目標。
(ENG 142) Basic Composition (3)
This course emphasizes the fundamentals of English writing: diction, syntax,
with emphasis placed on simple paragraph construction. The course is structured
around extensive writing and revision activities, including a personal journal
and a step-by-step analysis of how to write effective paragraphs.
(ENG 181) 治學法 (3)
本課程重於教導正確之讀書技巧及批判性思考之基礎概念。學生將藉由學習訊息吸收、處理、及輸出時所需要的技巧來提昇其學習之果效,諸如聽講、寫筆記、作摘要、閱讀、考試、作書面及口頭報告等技巧,並學習如何運用做決策原則。
(ENG 181) Methods of Study (3)
This course focuses on helping students learn the basics of proper study skills
and critical thinking. Students will learn the importance of using input, process
and output skills to improve their learning. Specific skill areas will include
the development of listening skills, note taking, summarizing, reading comprehension,
test taking, preparing for written and oral presentations and learning to apply
principles of decision making.

This course gives students practical instruction in how to speak effectively.
Students are required to research, organize and deliver various types of speeches
and to demonstrate their ability to use English communication skills to express
opinions and provide information to others in an organized manner.
(ENG205) 戲劇簡介 (3)
本課程著重於欣賞戲劇的文學形式以及啟發表演技巧與風格。將學習戲劇發展史,不同戲劇名著的風格與各種基本表演技巧,像是發聲運用、肢體語言、即興表演等。
(ENG 205) Introduction to Theater (3)
This course focuses on both the appreciation of drama as a literary form as
well as the development of acting techniques and styles. Students will study
the history of theater, the development of the dramatic genre, and learn basic
acting techniques such as vocal projection, pantomime, and improvisation.
(ENG 231, ENG 232) 世界文學一、二 (3, 3)
本課程主要是選讀各種呈現不同文化的英文小說、詩詞及戲劇。課程含概研讀文學作品中的文化、歷史等背景資料,並透過學生的表演,短文回應及小組活動來提升對文學名著的賞析能力。

These courses are a study of a culturally diverse selection of fiction, poetry
and drama either written in or translated into English. The course includes
a study of the cultural and historical contexts from which the literary works
originate. The comprehension and appreciation of great works of literature is
promoted through student performances, response journals and a variety of cooperative
activities.

This course builds on the foundational writing skills developed in Basic Composition
by bridging the gap between paragraph writing and essay writing. Emphasis is
placed on extensive writing practice and the use of student’s own work and revisions
as a teaching tool. Student-produced writing includes a variety of short essays,
stories, simple poems and cultural journal entries.

本課程著重正式的文章書寫過程,學生將學會如何書寫敘述、因果關係、對比、以及辯論等各種文體之文章。將強調過程從構思到最後的校訂等整體寫作步驟。
(ENG 242) Essay Writing (3)
This course looks at the formal process of essay writing. Students learn how
to write various types of essays including descriptive narrative, cause and
effect, comparison and contrast and argumentative essays. The overall process
of essay writing from the pre-writing to the final editing stage will be emphasized.
(ENG 401) 辯論學 (3)
本課程透過英文辯論的簡介和實際的演練,建立學生高階的英文溝通技巧,學生必須藉由收集資料、組織及運用策略的能力來呈現出各種不同議題的辯論。
(ENG 301) Debate (3)
This course focuses on the development of higher-level English communication
skills through the introduction to and practice of English language debate.
Students are required to demonstrate their ability to research, organize, strategize
and engage in debates on a variety of issues.
(ENG 303) 跨文化溝通 (3)
本課程為跨文化溝通之基礎課程,學生將透過本課程,認識人性基本價值及文化的差異,學習自我分析且讓學生更了解自己及其居住國家之文化,學習如何在跨國文化中做有效及適當的溝通。
(ENG 303) Intercultural Communication (3)
This course is a foundational course in the area of cross-cultural communication.
In this course students will: study the basic values of human nature and how
they differ from culture to culture; do a self-analysis in order to gain a better
understanding of themselves and the culture they live in; and study the communication
skills needed to be able to function effectively in a cross-cultural setting.

(ENG 331, 332) American Literature I, II (3, 3)
These courses give students an overview of major American Literature from the
colonial period through the 20th century. The course includes a study of the
characteristics of American culture and history from the periods in which the
literary works originate and promotes the comprehension and appreciation of
great works of literature through class discussions, student performances, response
journals and a variety of cooperative activities.
(ENG 341) 論文寫作概論 (3)
本課程培養學生論文寫作的技能,內容包括如何收集資料、做筆記、建立論文基本架構及內容、資料組織及整理等。學生須以一位美國作家之作品及世界觀點為基礎,用英文完成一份完整的論文報告。
(ENG 341) Intro to Research Writing (3)
This course focuses on the development of students’ research skills through
instruction and practice in the processes of information gathering, note-taking,
thesis formulation and development, content organization and documentation.
Students work together to produce an original, full-length research paper based
on an American author’s works and worldview.
(ENG 343) 論文寫作 (3)
本課程以論文寫作概論所學之技巧及基礎,更進一步地指導學生完成個人之論文寫作報告。教師將扮演指導者的角色、在學生寫作過程中幫助學生完成作品。故與學生個別討論,將是本課程之重點。
(ENG 343) Research Writing (3)
This course advances on the techniques and skills learned in the Intro to Research
Writing course by requiring students to write their own individual research
paper. The instructor’s role in this class is to act as an advisor as the students
work their way through the research writing process. Individual student conferences
are a major component of this self-paced course.
(ENG 405) 戲劇製作 (3)
本課程使學生有機會使用英文劇本進行導演及表演一齣英文劇。學生必須展現基本表演的能力,如音量控制、肢體語言表現、角色發展等,同時體驗製作戲劇中舞台設計的技巧。
註: Eng 407戲劇實習一以及ENG 408戲劇實習二兩門課可以抵免戲劇製作課程。
(ENG 405) Theater Production (3)
This course focuses on the production of English language plays that are directed
and performed by the students. Students are required to demonstrate competence
in the fundamentals of acting (effective use of voice, body language, and the
understanding of character), while experiencing the technical aspects of theater
production.
Note: Eng 407 Theater Workshop I and ENG 408 Theater Workshop II (both courses
required) can substitute for Theater Production.
(ENG 431, ENG 432) 英國文學一、二 (3, 3)

This course focuses on the development of students’ creative expression in writing.
Students are required to produce a variety of creative essays, short stories
and poems as a means of practicing and developing their writing skills.

This course is developed around the English Department graduation standards.
A major case study and/or research project will be required that demonstrates
the student has adequately grasped the six major standards required of students
upon graduation from our department.

(ENG 233) 世界小說 (3)
本課程幫助學生增進其英語溝通技巧,藉由閱讀三到五本非英國和北美的小說,加強學生的閱讀能力。本課程幫助學生建立閱讀英文小說的信心,以從中得到樂趣,並藉此增進對他人的了解與寬容,尤其是面對不同文化及宗教背景的族群。學生也將學習分工合作,以完成小組中的作業和報告。
(ENG 233) World Novels (3)
This course is designed to help students improve their English communication
skills, especially their reading skills as they read and study four to five
novels that would not be considered British or North American literature. The
course will also help students gain confidence and find pleasure in reading
in English, develop a greater understanding and tolerance of others, especially
those from different cultural, national or religious backgrounds and learn to
work cooperatively as they complete group projects and presentations based on
the literature.

This course is a survey of the literary aspects of the English translations
of the Old Testament of the Bible. The course surveys themes, characters, narratives
and poetic forms. Students are encouraged to develop their English skills through
reading, responding to the text, and presenting a variety of oral and written
reports to the class.

This course is a survey of the literary aspects of the English translations
of the New Testament of the Bible. The course surveys themes, characters, narratives
and poetic forms. Students are encouraged to develop their English skills through
reading and responding to the text, and through presenting a variety of oral
and written reports to the class.

This course will emphasize the development of daily Christian living, with training
in Bible reading, Bible study, Bible memory, prayer and evangelism. The goal
is to train the believer to become a disciple of Christ who will be able to
train others (1 Timothy 2:2) thereby multiplying the church.

This course offers students an opportunity to study at least four American novels
that reflect the American culture of four distinct periods in American history.
Students are encouraged to develop their English skills through reading and
responding to the text, through building vocabulary and through presenting a
variety of oral and written reports to the class.

This course focuses on understanding dramatic scripts through detailed text
analysis. Students will enter the world of the playwright by examining the structure
of the play, the development of the characters, and the background information
of the period.
(ENG 336) 兒童基督教文學
此課程主要以閱讀適合8-15歲之英國以及美國兒童文學作品為主,將著重於探索並了解其主旨,尤其強調基督教價值以及倫理。
(ENG 336) Christian Themes in Children’s Literature
This course will focus on English and American literature written for children
(ages 8-15). The course is a reading based course with emphasis placed on finding
and understanding themes within the literature, specifically those with Christian
values and ethics.

Purpose is to study the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ
as recorded by the Apostle John in his Gospel. Students will be encouraged to
develop their English skills through reading and responding to the text, class
discussions and written and oral presentations
(ENG 346) 短篇故事寫作 (3)
本課程幫助學生分析、了解和欣賞不同的短篇故事。透過大量小組和個人寫作,學生有機會激發創作英文短篇故事的能力。
(ENG 346) Short Story Writing (3)
This course offers students an opportunity to analyze, understand and appreciate
the short story. Through extensive group and individual writing projects students
will have the opportunity to develop their own ability to write short stories
in English.
(ENG 348) 劇本寫作 (3)
本課程強調角色、情節、並以動作導向為對白之創作劇本寫作。學生將透過寫作獨幕劇本檢視基本的戲劇寫作結構。學生必須完成20-30頁的劇本,大約為30-45分鐘的戲劇。
(ENG 348) Playwriting (3)
Emphasis will be placed on character and plot development as well as creating
action-oriented dialogue. Students will examine these basic structures of playwriting
through the process of writing their own one-act plays. Class assignments and
course instruction will revolve around the completion of these 30-45 minute
plays (20-30 pages).
(ENG 353) 進階門徒訓練 (3) (供基督徒選修)
課程著重訓練其他人成為主的門徒,學習者將運用在基礎門訓課程中習得的技巧, 對初信者與慕道友做一對一的帶領,並使自己在帶領門徒的技巧上更臻成熟。
(ENG 353) Advanced Discipleship Training (3)
The emphasis in this class will be on discipling others. Students will be guided
to use and strengthen the skills learned in Basic Discipleship as they apply
them in a one-on-one discipling relationship with a young Christian or a seeker.
(ENG 391) 翻譯學 (3)
本課程將介紹原文及譯文的特色,並培養學生的翻譯技巧。學生使用各樣的英文與中文的文體來比較、討論並實際練習翻譯各類的文章。
(ENG 391) Translation (3)
This course provides an introduction to the features of source and target language
and promotes the development of students’ translation skills. Students compare,
discuss and practice translating using various genre of literature both in English
and Chinese.
(ENG 407) 戲劇實習一 (3)
學生將學習基本的舞台表演技巧,並演出一齣戲劇。課程強調準確發音、清晰咬字、舞台音量投射、身體語言、角色揣摩、舞台走位及角色互動等。選修表演實習的學生也必須選修戲劇實習才會得到學分。課程要求:學生必須先試鏡通過。
註:戲劇實習一及戲劇實習二可以抵ENG 405戲劇製作,學生若未通過這兩門課則仍需通過戲劇製作課程。
(ENG 407) Theater Workshop I (3)
Students will prepare and perform a full-length play while learning the fundamental
skills of performing on stage. Emphasis will be placed on proper pronunciation,
articulation and voice projection, body language, character development, blocking,
and character interaction. Students enrolling in Theater Workshop I must also
enroll in Theater Workshop II in the spring to receive credit. Note: These two
courses together can substitute for the required course ENG 405 Theater Production.
Students not passing these courses must still meet the requirement for Theater
Production
Prerequisite: Students must pass an audition.
(ENG 408) 戲劇實習二 (3)
本課程使學生對表演藝術有更充分的認識,並透過演出一齣著名的全長劇,使學生對於幕前和幕後戲劇製作,有更深入的了解和經驗。
(ENG 408) Theater Workshop II (3)
This course gives students further understanding and experience in the world
of performing art. By working on plays written by well-known playwrights, and
staging full-length production, students will gain experience in theater production,
both on and behind the stage. Prerequisite: Theater Workshop I

This course offers students an opportunity to study at least four British novels
that reflect different writing styles, diverse themes, and various time periods.
Students are encouraged to develop their English skills through reading, in-class
activities, building vocabulary, and presenting written and oral reports.
(ENG 435) 莎士比亞 (3)
本課程主要探討及分析莎士比亞之戲劇文學。將閱讀數本由莎翁所寫之劇本,並探討它對西方文化所帶來之影響。本課程無先修之規定,但鼓勵在選讀之前可以先上(ENG

(ENG 435) Shakespeare (3)
This course is for students that enjoy dramatic English literature and want
to spend more time learning about, discussing and analyzing the Shakespearean
plays. Several plays of Shakespeare will be read for their literary and historical
influence on Western culture. There is no prerequisite but students are encouraged
to take Drama as Literature (ENG 335) before taking this course.
(ENG 453) 美國文化研討 (3)
本課程使學生有機會去認識美國的各種文化,並與台灣價值觀做一比較。學生將認識美國的基本價值觀及其由來,並了解這些價值觀如何影響其生活方式。本課程特別強調美國的教育、價值觀、及文化模式等,以幫助學生適應將來在美國的求學生活。
(ENG 453) American Culture Survey (3)
This course offers students an opportunity to develop an awareness of the cultural
values of the United States and compare and contrast these values with those
of Taiwan. Information about basic American values, where they came from and
how these values affect the institutions and ways of life in the USA will be
addressed. Special emphasis will be given to education in the USA with a focus
on the values, attitudes and cultural patterns that students are likely to encounter
when studying in American university and the skills students need to survive
and thrive in an American university setting.
(ENG 455) 宣教事工 (3) (供基督徒選修)
此課程主要幫助基督徒學生了解宣揚信仰的責任。透過查考聖經及宣教歷史上各種不同的宣教技巧及方法來省思宣教事工。學生應具備宣教的熱誠並參加短宣隊以實際運用課程所學。課程規定:TOEFL
或 pre-TOEFL測驗420分或以上。
(ENG 455) Ministry Outreach (3)
This course is designed to help make students aware of their Christian responsibility
to share their faith. It examines evangelism and missions by examining Scripture
and the various techniques and methods used over the course of history. Students
taking the Ministry Outreach course should have a heart for missions. A short
missions trip is a key practical component of this course. Prerequisite: 420
or above on the TOEFL or pre-TOEFL test.

The content of this course varies with the intent of the instructor. The course
is designed to allow an instructor and students with an above average academic
ability to recommend a course that currently is not offered at Christ’s College.
The medium of instruction must be English and the English Department Chair and
the Academic Affairs Office must approve the content of the course.

This course provides an introduction to Chinese/English and English/ Chinese
interpretation and the functions of an interpreter. Students will be exposed
to several interpretation methods and will learn how to prepare materials for
different areas for different areas of the profession. Students will practice
consecutive and simultaneous interpretation.

This course provides an introduction to classic children’s literature in English,
including nursery rhymes, children’s poetry, fables, and the works of well-know
writers for children. Students will read popular picture books and well-known
children’s literature. The course aims to integrate the cultural, developmental
and educational aspects of children’s literature, with an emphasis on practical
applications for teaching English to speakers of other languages.

This course provides an introduction to Teaching English to Speakers of Other
Languages through instruction in the basic principles of second language acquisition,
basic methods of teaching English to non-native speakers, and some practical
tools for course design and evaluation used by language teachers. Students demonstrate
mastery of course content by planning and teaching English lessons in simulated
teaching situations.

This course is designed to give students a broad understanding of human language:
what it is, what it’s used for, and how it works. The course will give students
a taste of some of the subfields of linguistics (such as phonetics, phonology,
morphology, semantics, syntax, pragmatics, historical linguistics, psycholinguistics,
and sociolinguistics) to help them acquire the basic vocabulary and concepts
necessary to further pursue linguistic studies.

This course builds on the foundational principles of TESOL Methods I by giving
students additional information and practice in English lesson planning, teaching
and evaluation. Design and delivery of lessons that meet the needs of elementary
learners will receive special attention. Classroom management issues that relate
to effective delivery of Elementary English language lessons are also stressed.

This course is designed to introduce students to the current business trends
in small business / entrepreneurship, international business and e-commerce.
The course incorporates the key concepts of global markets, customer-driven
organization, customer satisfaction, technology and innovation, the Internet,
teams and quality, cultural diversity, ethics and social responsibility. To
accommodate students who take this course who are uncertain about their career
choice and to make class interesting and useful, we discuss careers in each
of the topic areas and provide profiles and job descriptions of people who have
followed those careers.

This course is designed to help students apply their English communication skills

of making intelligent business decisions.
